Your Stylus Has Stopped Working: Why Capacitive Styluses Fail and How to Revive Yours
A capacitive stylus is a deceptively simple object, which is why it's so frustrating when one stops behaving. It worked last month. You haven't dropped it. And now it skips mid-stroke, needs pressing harder than it should, or does nothing at all.
The good news is that a passive stylus has almost nothing in it to break. In most cases the pen is fine and something in the chain between your hand and the screen has changed. Here's how to find it.
First, how a capacitive stylus actually works
A modern touchscreen doesn't detect pressure. It detects a change in the electrical field just above the glass. Your finger works because your body is conductive and slightly capacitive — bringing it near the screen distorts that field in a way the panel can measure and locate.
A passive capacitive stylus — the kind with a soft conductive tip and no battery, including our Magicwand — works by extending that same effect. Charge from your hand travels up the barrel to a conductive tip, which presents the screen with something that looks electrically like a fingertip. The whole thing is one continuous conductive path: your hand, the barrel, the tip, the screen.
This is worth understanding because it explains every failure mode. An active stylus like an Apple Pencil is a different animal — it has a battery, transmits its own signal, and can report tilt and pressure. A passive stylus can't, and never claimed to. It's a precise, quiet, always-charged pointing device, not a drawing tablet.
The tip is almost always the culprit
Passive stylus tips are made of conductive rubber or foam, and they wear. Not dramatically — they just flatten, harden and dry out. A tip that has gone stiff makes a smaller, less consistent contact patch with the glass, and a smaller contact patch means a weaker signal.
The tell-tale symptoms of a worn tip:
- Strokes that break up into dashes rather than a continuous line
- Needing noticeably more pressure than you used to
- Works at some angles but not others
- A visibly squashed, shiny or cracked tip
Before replacing it, try wiping the tip with a slightly damp cloth. Conductive rubber picks up skin oil and dust, both of which insulate. If that doesn't restore it, the tip has simply reached the end of its life — replacement Magicwand tips are available for the editions that take them, which is a good deal cheaper than a new stylus.
You might genuinely be holding it wrong
This sounds patronising, but it's the second most common cause and it catches everyone eventually. Because the conductive path runs through your hand, anything that interrupts it stops the stylus working.
Common interruptions:
- Holding it too near the tip end, on a section of barrel that isn't conductive
- Very dry hands, particularly in winter with the heating on
- Ordinary gloves, which insulate your hand from the barrel entirely
- Holding the pen loosely by the very end while resting your palm off the screen
If it works when you grip firmly around the middle and fails when you hold it delicately, that's your answer — and it's not a fault.
The screen might be the problem
Touchscreens are sensitive to what sits between the sensor layer and the tip. Two things go wrong here.
The first is grime. A film of oil across the glass raises the effective distance between tip and sensor and makes tracking inconsistent, usually in the areas you touch most. A proper wipe with a microfibre cloth fixes it.
The second is thickness. A very thick protector — typically heavy tempered glass, or two protectors stacked — puts extra material between the tip and the sensor grid. A fingertip has enough surface area to punch through that; a stylus tip's smaller contact patch often doesn't. If your stylus started misbehaving the same week you fitted a new protector, you've found the cause. Thinner, fully-bonded protectors don't have this problem, which is a large part of why we make ours the way we do.
Air gaps matter as much as thickness. A protector that has lifted at one corner will produce a dead zone in exactly that spot — easy to diagnose, because your finger will still work there while the stylus won't.
Cold weather, gloves and the same physics
The reason a stylus fails through ordinary gloves is precisely the reason your bare finger fails through them: the glove breaks the conductive path. Worth knowing: a stylus and touchscreen gloves work together happily, because the glove's conductive fingertip passes charge to the barrel just as bare skin would. In genuinely cold conditions that combination is more reliable than either alone.
When to stop troubleshooting and replace
Replace the tip if it's flattened, split or has gone hard. Replace the whole stylus if the barrel has cracked, the tip mount is loose enough to wobble, or a tip swap doesn't restore normal behaviour. If you write a lot and want something you'll actually keep on you, the ballpoint pen editions combine both jobs in one barrel, which in practice means you stop losing it.
A thirty-second checklist
- Clean the screen with a microfibre cloth.
- Wipe the stylus tip with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry.
- Grip the barrel firmly around the middle, with bare skin or a conductive glove.
- Check the tip for flattening, splitting or wobble.
- Check your screen protector for lifted corners — and note whether a finger works where the stylus doesn't.
- If all of that is fine, replace the tip.
Work through those in order before you buy anything — the first three cost nothing, take a minute, and rule out the most common causes.
