Nothing Phone (3) Screen Protector Guide: Ultrasonic Fingerprint, the Factory Film and Whether Matte Suits It

The Nothing Phone (3) is an unusual thing to protect. It has a genuinely tough front, a rear that most owners want on display rather than hidden, and an in-display fingerprint reader that is fussier about screen protectors than most people expect. If you're deciding what to put on it — or trying to work out why your current protector has made unlocking a chore — here's the practical picture.

What you're actually protecting

The Phone (3) has a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel running at 1,260 x 2,800 with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a quoted peak brightness of 4,500 nits. The front glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 7i; the rear is Gorilla Glass Victus, with an aluminium frame between them. The phone carries an IP68 rating.

That's a well-built front, and it's worth saying plainly: Gorilla Glass 7i resists everyday abrasion well. What it doesn't do is resist the specific thing that ruins most phone screens — a hard particle of grit trapped between the glass and something else. Sand, ceramic dust and the fine mineral debris that lives in pockets and handbags are harder than any phone glass ever made. That is the case for a protector, and it hasn't changed in fifteen years.

The ultrasonic fingerprint reader is the deciding factor

The Phone (3) uses an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader rather than the optical type found in most mid-range Android phones. The difference matters enormously when you're choosing a protector.

An optical sensor photographs your fingerprint using light from the display. It mostly cares about clarity. An ultrasonic sensor sends a high-frequency sound pulse through the glass, bounces it off the ridges and valleys of your finger, and reconstructs the print from the returning echo. It cares about what the sound has to travel through — every additional layer, and especially every air gap or thick adhesive, weakens and distorts that echo.

This is why thick tempered glass protectors have a reputation for breaking ultrasonic unlocks. It isn't a manufacturing defect; it's physics. We wrote about exactly this problem when it hit the OnePlus 15's ultrasonic reader, and the same reasoning applies here.

What to look for:

  • Thin. A thinner protector means less material for the ultrasonic pulse to cross. This is the single most important variable.
  • Full adhesion, not edge-glue. Protectors that only stick around the perimeter leave an air layer over the sensor. Air is close to the worst possible medium for an ultrasonic pulse.
  • No sensor cut-out required. A protector that needs a hole punched over the fingerprint area is telling you it's too thick to work through.

One practical tip whatever you fit: re-register your fingerprints after applying a protector. The sensor stores a reference reading, and that reading was taken through bare glass. Deleting and re-enrolling your prints through the new protector fixes a surprising number of "my unlock got worse" complaints on its own.

The factory-applied film isn't the end of the story

The Phone (3) ships with a protector already on the screen. It's genuinely useful — it means the phone is covered from the moment you open the box, and it takes the first few weeks of scuffs.

It is not, however, meant to last. Pre-applied films are thin, softly finished and tend to pick up visible scratches within a couple of months of normal use. Peeling it off and replacing it with something more durable is a reasonable upgrade; leaving it on and applying a second protector over the top is not — you'll trap air, add thickness the fingerprint sensor doesn't want, and get a hazy result.

Clear or matte?

With a 4,500-nit peak brightness, the Phone (3) is one of the easier phones to read outdoors, which reduces the usual argument for matte. If you mostly want the display to look the way Nothing designed it, stay clear.

Matte earns its place if you work under overhead strip lighting, read for long stretches, or simply hate seeing your own reflection. The trade is a slight softening of fine text and a marginally less punchy image. If that appeals, the matte anti-glare version is the same base material with a diffusing surface.

Don't forget the back

The Glyph Matrix — the 489-LED monochrome dot display in the top-right of the rear panel — is the reason a lot of people bought this phone, and it's the reason a lot of them won't use an opaque case. That's a fair choice, but it does mean the Gorilla Glass Victus back is exposed to every surface you put the phone down on. A clear back film is the low-compromise option: the Glyph Matrix stays visible, the glass stays unmarked.

Fitting it properly

Most protector failures are application failures. Dust under the film over the fingerprint area causes exactly the unlock problems people blame on the protector itself. The short version

  • Go thin and fully-adhesive so the ultrasonic sensor keeps working.
  • Remove the factory film before fitting a proper protector — never stack them.
  • Re-enrol your fingerprints afterwards.
  • Clear if you want the panel at its best; matte if glare bothers you more than absolute sharpness.
  • Protect the back too if you're going caseless to keep the Glyph Matrix on show.
