OnePlus 15 Fingerprint Sensor Not Working With a Screen Protector? Here's Why (and How to Fix It)

If your OnePlus 15 suddenly stopped recognising your fingerprint after you applied a screen protector, you're not imagining it — and your sensor isn't broken. The OnePlus 15 uses an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, and ultrasonic sensors are far more sensitive to what sits on top of the glass than the optical sensors used in older phones.

Why ultrasonic sensors are different

Optical fingerprint sensors take a picture of your fingerprint through the display. Ultrasonic sensors instead send a pulse of sound through the glass and read the echo bouncing off the ridges of your finger. That makes them faster and more reliable with wet fingers — one of the OnePlus 15's genuinely nice upgrades — but it also means the sound wave has to travel through whatever protector you've applied.

Two things disrupt that sound wave:

• Air gaps. Any bubble or partial adhesion over the sensor area scatters the ultrasonic pulse. This is the single most common cause of failed reads.
• Thickness and material. Very thick tempered glass, or protectors with inconsistent adhesive layers, dampen the signal enough that match speed drops noticeably — or reads fail outright.

The curved-edge complication

The OnePlus 15's display has curved edges, which rules out cheap flat-cut protectors — they tend to lift at the corners within days, and once the edge lifts, air creeps toward the sensor zone and unlock reliability degrades over time. A protector that fit fine on day one can start failing a week later for exactly this reason.

How to fix it

1. Re-register your fingerprints after applying the protector. This is the step most people skip. Delete your stored fingerprints, then enrol them again through the protector so the sensor learns the new signal profile. Enrol the same finger twice for best results.
2. Check for bubbles over the sensor area. Even a tiny one matters. If you can't press it out, reinstall.
3. Turn on the protector setting. Some OxygenOS versions include a screen-protector mode that increases touch and sensor sensitivity — check Settings → Display.

Still failing?

If reads fail even with no protector applied, clean the sensor area with a microfibre cloth and re-enrol — residue from the old protector's adhesive can linger. And if you're switching from film to glass (or vice versa), always re-enrol: the two materials produce different signal profiles.
