If you've ever stood in a phone accessories aisle, or scrolled through Amazon at midnight, you've faced the same paralysing choice: tempered glass or film? Everyone seems to have a firm opinion. The glass crowd says film scratches too easily. The film camp says glass shatters and takes your screen with it. Both sides have a point.
After years of designing and manufacturing screen protectors in the UK, we've learned that the answer isn't black-and-white; it depends on how you use your phone, what you value, and what type of film or glass you're actually comparing.

What Tempered Glass Screen Protectors Actually Are
Tempered glass protectors are made from chemically strengthened glass, typically rated at 9H hardness (the same scale used for minerals - diamond is 10H). They're rigid, sit slightly proud of the screen surface, and feel almost identical to the bare glass of most modern phone screens.
The appeal: They absorb impacts well, feel premium, and are easy to apply cleanly in one go.
The catch: They can crack. And when they do, they fail entirely. Sharp edges, reduced touch sensitivity, and a screen that looks worse than if you'd had no protector at all. Many people go through two or three per year, especially on phones with curved edges, where the adhesion is weakest.
What Film Screen Protectors Actually Are
"Film" covers a wide range of materials, from cheap PET plastic (avoid these) to advanced polymer composites that rival glass in hardness while remaining completely shatter-proof. The material matters enormously.
Basic PET film is soft, scratches easily, and offers minimal impact protection. This is why film protectors got a poor reputation.
Advanced polyurethane and composite-film protectors, however, are a different category entirely. Impact Protection
This is where the comparison gets interesting. Glass transmits force. When a phone drops corner-first, a glass protector can shatter — and that shock wave sometimes damages the phone's actual display underneath. Low-quality glass protectors with excessive thickness will block ultrasonic fingerprint sensors (common on Samsung Galaxy phones). Choose tempered glass if:

- You're careful with your phone and replace protectors happily when they crack.

Choose advanced film (not basic PET) if:
- You want the longest-lasting protection.
- You've had glass protectors shatter in the past.
- You care about impact protection as much as scratch resistance.
- You want the best value over the phone's lifetime.
Avoid cheap PET film entirely. It's the material that gave film a bad reputation, and it genuinely is inferior. If you're going film, go for a quality polymer or ultra-tough composite material.
