How to Protect the iPhone Air Without Ruining Its Thinness

The iPhone Air exists for one reason: to be impossibly thin. Which creates an obvious dilemma — every millimetre of protection you add works against the very thing you bought it for. After a few months of customer questions since launch, here's our honest take on protecting it sensibly.

Does it actually need protection?

Thin phones concentrate the same drop forces into less structure. Apple has done impressive work with the Air's titanium frame and cover glass, but physics is physics: less material between the world and the internals means less margin for error. The two vulnerable points are the same as any phone — the display (a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion) and the corners, where drop energy concentrates.

The screen: a protector costs you nothing

A quality screen protector adds a fraction of a millimetre and no visible bulk, so this is the easy half of the answer. On a ProMotion display you want optically clear glass with full adhesive — cheap film dulls a 120Hz OLED noticeably. One Air-specific note: with a chassis this thin, a protector that overhangs the curved glass edge even slightly will catch on pockets and lift. Buy one cut specifically for the Air, not a "6.5-inch universal" sheet.

The body: thin case or no case?

This is where Air owners agonise. Three honest options:

• No case. Legitimate choice if you're careful and insured. Consider at least a protector and being deliberate about which pocket it lives in (keys are the enemy).
• A slim leather case. The sweet spot for most people. A thin leather case adds roughly a millimetre per side, real corner protection, and grip — and grip is underrated: most drops happen because thin, slippery phones slide out of hands and off armrests. If you can't bring yourself to case it, a sleeve or pouch protects the phone in transit — bag, pocket, bedside — while leaving it gloriously naked in use. It's how a lot of thin-phone devotees square the circle.

Bottom line

Screen protector: yes, always — it's free thinness-wise. Case: a slim one preserves 90% of what makes the Air special while removing most of the risk. And whatever you choose, choose Air-specific accessories; this phone's dimensions forgive nothing that fits "approximately".
